Using Epoxy Resin with Artwork

Using Epoxy Resin with Artwork

Many artists love epoxy resin for its strength, versatility, and usability. It dries clear to preserve the color and texture of the artwork while adding a sleek, glossy shine to it. While epoxy shouldn’t come in contact with eyes or skin, it’s considered a very safe material to work with (in a properly ventilated room).

Epoxy resin is known for its durability and resistance to rust, moisture, and other wear and tear. Whether a piece of art is museum-quality brilliance or a Kindergarten classroom masterpiece, epoxy resin can preserve it for years to come by following a few simple guidelines.

Preparing the surface

Before applying the epoxy resin, make sure the surface of the artwork is completely dry. If there is any lingering moisture on the project, the epoxy resin will not adhere properly. Secondly, there shouldn’t be any dirt or loose material on the surface that could get caught in the epoxy resin and change the appearance of the artwork.

Be sure to place the artwork on a completely level surface before applying the epoxy resin. Since it self-levels, uneven surfaces will lead to running and pooling and an uneven appearance after the project dries.

Applying the epoxy resin

Resin can either be used as a sealant for a painting, sculpture, or other work of art, or it can act as the medium itself. Since it naturally dries clear, pigment or fillers can be added to create any color or design the artist wishes.

If bubbles appear on the surface of the project as the epoxy resin is applied, a torch will help burst and smooth the bubbles before they dry permanently into the project.

Magic Resin will be hard to the touch after 24 hours and should be left in an area that is free from dust or moisture to avoid any ripples, bubbles, or condensation in the final product.

Resin can be applied by pouring or with a brush, foam roller, putty knife, etc. Each tool offers a slightly different result. Experiment with various tools and techniques to achieve the desired effect. Remember to wear gloves to protect the skin and to apply the resin in a well-ventilated area.

The results

After the epoxy resin hardens, the piece of art will have a glossy shine and a surface that is smooth and sleek to the touch. If a clear coating of epoxy resin is used, the original colors of the artwork will be clearly visible, but protected by the durable layer of resin. Pigmented epoxy resin creates a durable, waterproof surface that will resist wear and remain vibrant for years to come.

The best way to use epoxy resin with artwork is to experiment on different surfaces and with varying methods of application. It’s a versatile medium that can produce a variety of unique results based on the imagination of the artist.
