Few things are more frustrating than finishing an epoxy table, casting or art piece and then noticing scratches, dust marks or a dull patch. The good news is that many surface imperfections can be corrected after the resin has fully cured.
Learning how to sand and polish epoxy resin is mostly a matter of patience. Start with the least aggressive abrasive that will remove the defect, work through progressively finer grits and polish only after the sanding pattern is completely uniform.

Can epoxy resin be sanded and polished?
Yes. Fully cured epoxy resin can be sanded to level the surface, soften sharp edges and remove shallow defects. Fine wet sanding followed by compounding and polishing can then bring a clear surface back to a high gloss.
The words fully cured matter. Epoxy that is still soft can clog sandpaper, smear across the surface and develop marks that are much harder to remove. Cure time varies by formula, pour depth and room temperature, so follow the directions for your product rather than relying on the clock alone. Should you polish the surface or apply another coat?
Sanding and polishing are ideal for defects that are at or very close to the surface. A new coat is usually more efficient when the surface has deep low spots, widespread pinholes or damage that would require removing too much material.
Light scratches, haze or minor scuffs:
Fine sanding followed by compound and polish.
Dust nibs or a few raised marks:
Level the marks carefully, then sand and polish the full area.
Runs, ridges or an uneven surface:
Block-sand the high areas. Polish if enough clear material remains; otherwise, apply another coat.
Deep scratches, pinholes or exposed bubbles:
Fill or recoat after proper surface preparation.
Soft, flexible or tacky epoxy:
Do not sand yet. Identify the curing problem first.
Cloudiness or discolouration inside the casting:
Polishing the surface will not remove a defect trapped within the epoxy.
Before beginning, inspect the piece under a strong light from several angles. A scratch that looks deep may only be in the surface, while a bubble or cloudy area may be suspended below it. That distinction determines whether sanding will actually help.
What you need to sand and polish epoxy resin

Wet sanding vs. dry sanding epoxy resin
Both methods have a place in the process.
Dry sanding removes material quickly and makes it easier to level runs, high spots and uneven edges. It is most useful during the earlier shaping stages, but it produces airborne dust and the paper may clog more quickly.
Wet sanding is generally preferred for the fine finishing stages. Water carries away sanding residue, helps the paper cut more consistently and reduces heat at the surface. It also makes it easier to work through very fine grits before polishing.
Do not wet-sand across exposed unfinished wood. Water can raise the grain or leave a stain beside the resin. On a wood-and-epoxy table, protect the wood or plan the resin and wood finishing steps together.
What grit should you use on epoxy resin?
There is no single starting grit for every piece. The correct choice depends on the depth of the defect and how much material can safely be removed.
Heavy run or clearly raised edge:
Start around 120–180 grit and work carefully with a flat sanding block.
Moderate scratch or uneven sanding marks:
Start around 220–320 grit.
Light scratch, haze or minor surface defect:
Start around 400–600 grit.
Surface is already level and only needs refinement:
Start around 800–1000 grit.
Use the finest grit that can remove the problem in a reasonable amount of time. Starting too coarse creates deep sanding lines that must be removed again at every later stage.
A common progression for a clear high-gloss finish is 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit, followed by compound and polish. If the surface needs levelling, begin lower and add the necessary intermediate steps. The exact sequence matters less than fully removing the previous scratch pattern before moving to a finer grit.
How to sand and polish epoxy resin step by step
1. Allow the epoxy to cure completely
Confirm that the resin has reached the full-cure stage stated in the product instructions. The surface should be hard and stable, not rubbery or easy to mark. Cooler conditions can extend the cure considerably.
2. Clean and inspect the surface
Remove dirt, oil and loose residue before sanding. Use a cleaning method compatible with the epoxy and let the piece dry completely. Contamination caught under a sanding pad can create new scratches, while wax or silicone residue can cause problems if you later decide to recoat.
Use angled light to locate the deepest mark. Check the edges as well as the centre, and decide in advance which areas need levelling.
3. Level raised defects first
For a run, ridge or dust nib, wrap the selected abrasive around a firm, flat block. Sand the high point with controlled strokes and light pressure. Keep the block flat instead of digging one corner into the resin.
On a broad tabletop, sand beyond the immediate defect so the repair blends smoothly into the surrounding surface. Be especially careful near corners and edges, where a thin coating can be sanded through quickly.
4. Sand the entire repair area evenly
Once the high spots are level, sand the full area with a consistent pattern. For fine wet sanding, mist the surface and paper with clean water. The goal is an even, uniformly dull appearance without shiny low spots.
Work in overlapping passes and avoid pressing harder to make the process faster. Pressure creates unevenness and heat. Let the abrasive do the cutting.
5. Move through progressively finer grits
Rinse the surface, the sanding block and your hands before changing grit. Even one coarse particle left behind can create a fresh scratch during a later stage.
Change the direction of your sanding pattern slightly with each grit. This makes the previous scratches easier to see. Do not move on until the surface shows only the finer, more uniform pattern from the grit you are currently using.
6. Dry the surface and inspect it carefully
Water temporarily makes sanded epoxy look clearer than it really is. Wipe the piece clean, let it dry and inspect it under direct and angled light. If a deeper scratch remains, return to the grit that can remove it rather than trying to hide it with polishing compound.
7. Apply polishing compound
After the final sanding stage, apply a small amount of compound with a clean foam pad. Work a manageable section at a time. If using a machine polisher, begin conservatively, keep the pad moving and avoid building heat in one spot.
The compound removes the extremely fine haze left by the last sandpaper. Wipe away the residue with a clean microfibre cloth and inspect the surface before applying more.
8. Finish with a finer polish
Use a separate clean pad for the finishing polish. This second step refines the clarity and removes light compounding haze. Continue until the reflection looks even across the piece.
A perfect finish does not come from heavy pressure. It comes from a flat surface, a complete grit progression, clean pads and controlled polishing.
9. Clean the finished piece
Remove the remaining polish with a clean cloth and inspect the piece from several angles. Avoid applying wax or another protective product if you may add another epoxy coat later, as it would have to be removed completely before recoating.
When another clear epoxy coat is the better finish
Polishing works best when the surface is already flat and the defects are shallow. If the piece has numerous pinholes, deep scratches, widespread waviness or very little coating thickness left above the design, a fresh clear coat may be faster and safer.
For recoating, the existing epoxy generally needs to be fully cured, clean, dry and sanded to a uniform dull finish so the new layer can form a mechanical bond. Follow the preparation and recoat instructions for the exact product being used. Common epoxy sanding and polishing mistakes
Sanding before full cure: Soft epoxy gums up the paper and deforms instead of sanding cleanly. Give the resin the full time and temperature it requires.
Starting with a grit that is too coarse: Aggressive paper removes material quickly, but it also creates deeper scratches and increases the risk of cutting through a thin clear coat.
Skipping too many grits: Very fine sandpaper is inefficient at removing deep lines from a much coarser grit. A gradual progression usually saves time overall.
Polishing before the scratches are gone: Compound can remove fine haze, but it will not level a deep scratch. If the mark is still visible after the surface dries, return to sanding.
Using too much pressure or speed: Excessive pressure can create low spots, round over edges and generate heat. Use steady passes and let the abrasive or compound work gradually.
Working with contaminated paper or pads: Rinse between grits and keep each polishing pad dedicated to one product. Coarse particles trapped in a fine pad can undo several stages of careful work.
